I finally finished reading Not That Kind of Guy by Andie J. Christopher. I say “finally” because it took me much longer than the other books I’ve read so far. (Need a book recommendation? Check out my Book Club page! I post reviews for everything I read there.)

Summary

Bridget Nolan is a successful assistant state’s attorney that just broke up with her boyfriend of a decade. As she navigates a single life again, she swears off romance for a long, long time — until she meets and mentors a handsome law student from a prestigious family. With her brother and sister-in-law’s bachelor party around the corner (which her ex is also going to), Bridget is desperate for a no-strings-attached date to keep her company. Luckily, her legal intern’s program is done just in time for him to swoop in and save the day.

Matt Kido is head over heels in love with Bridget Nolan. When Bridget needs a date for her brother’s bachelor party, he makes an impulsive decision to join her. Together, they embark on a wild weekend in Las Vegas. Sometimes, what happens in Vegas, doesn’t always stay in Vegas.

My General Impression Of This Book

I was recommended this book on Good Reads after I finished reading The Bromance Book Club and Undercover Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams. After reading the book summary, I was so excited that I broke my own rule and pre-ordered it. When I finally got it in the mail, I bumped it up a few slots on my To Be Read list so I could read it immediately.

The chapters are fairly short, but the story took a while to get exciting (like 20-ish chapters). And when it did get exciting, it was weighed down by Bridget’s complicated and painful past. I constantly found myself rereading chapters so I could better understand what was happening.

Unlike Bridget’s character, Matt was much more laid back, especially in his emotions. From the beginning of the book, I knew that even though he was from a rich family, his personality was not going to reflect that. His love for Bridget felt like it was in a constant uphill battle against her emotions. Sure, they had great sex, but as a couple, Bridget’s emotions and need for control kept her from experiencing Matt’s unconditional love for her. Even at the end of the book — when things were supposed to be all lovey dovey —I still got the feeling that Bridget still felt skeptical of Matt. (I should really cut her some slack because I was literally her in my own relationship up until two years ago.)

On Good Reads, I rated this book a 3 out 5 because I felt like the book summary promised something much more exciting and romantic than what I read. However, I did enjoy Matt’s patience and grace with Bridget. I feel like their relationship dynamic is common in every relationship so I’m glad the author kept the characters as real as possible.
