It's no secret that I love visiting Disneyland. Comfort is key for me when visiting the parks, and I have my favorite brand of shoes I love to wear. Unfortunately, my favorite shoes aren't water resistant, making riding the water rides at Disneyland squishy. Sure, I could pack a pair of slippers to use on the water rides, but that's one more thing I want to avoid carrying in my park bag.
I heard about Vessi through an Instagram ad and was intrigued. Vessi is an everywhere kind of sneaker you can wear in the rain, snow, slush, mud, and life, and it was the perfect solution to my water ride dilemma. So, I reached out to Vessi, and they sent me three pairs of shoes in exchange for my honest review. Keep reading to see if Vessi shoes live up to their hype.
ABOUT VESSI
Vessi shoes are 100% waterproof / weatherproof, making them perfect for rain, snow, mud, and slush. They are loved by 500,000+ puddle hunters internationally. They are vegan, cruelty-free, and environmentally friendly. (Vessi uses 99% of knit material during production, a 97% increase from the industry standard.) They are also technologically advanced; their patented Dymatex outer layer is the first dual-climate knit material.
I chose to try The Weekend Sneaker (one pair for me and one for my husband) and the Everyday Move shoe.
The Weekend Sneaker. The Weekend Sneaker is a modern-day shoe perfect for activities around the town, like running errands and shopping. The shoe is true to size; I ordered a women’s size 8 and got my husband a men's size 9. They were easy to slip on and super light and comfortable. Sadly, Vessi was out of Marble White—I love white shoes— so I ordered it in the color Camel instead. I’m not too excited about how the color looks on me and making it work with my clothes has been a challenge. I ordered my husband the same shoe in Asphalt Black. He wore it on Splash Mountain on our first day in Disneyland, and the shoes kept his socks and feet from getting soaked from the ride.
Everyday Move. Vessi designed their Everyday Move shoes to get people moving. They feel sturdy, making them great for outdoor adventures. Now, I'm no podiatrist, but the lifted heel feels amazing for someone like me who tends to walk on the outsides of their feet.
The shoes were tight when I tried them on the shoe for the first time. And when I tried to break them in during a workout two weeks before our trip, my feet felt so numb I finished my workout without shoes. It's safe to say the Everyday Move shoe isn't true to size, which made wearing it at Disneyland much more uncomfortable.
In addition to the smaller-than-normal shoe size, the material used to make the shoe water-resistant is unbreathable, making it uncomfortable to be on your feet for 14-plus hours at a theme park. As the weather's temperature increased, so did the temperature in my shoe. After four hours, my feet were aching, sweaty, and formed blisters, and I had to switch socks and shoes for relief.
When I got home, I submitted a review on Vessi’s website for the Everyday Move shoe, and a Vessi customer service representative emailed me for more information about my experience. When I told him how hot the inside of the shoe got throughout the day, he explained the shoes couldn't be made more breathable because the ventilation would make the shoe less waterproof / weatherproof. I truly appreciated how he took the time to explain how Vessi makes their shoes and why I experienced the issues I experienced.
Although my feet took a beating with this shoe at Disneyland, it did keep my socks and feet dry on the water rides, so that was a plus. I haven't worn the Everyday Shoe since we returned home because I'm afraid of my feet hurting again. If you still want to try the Everyday Shoe, I recommend sizing up one or two shoe sizes.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I think Vessi has a unique product, but there’s room for improvement, especially concerning comfort. While the shoes kept our feet and socks dry from the water rides, it's not a shoe I would recommend wearing all day to a theme park or if you work on your feet for eight-plus hours a day. Vessis are more casual shoes to wear while running short errands in the rain, mud, snow, slush, or on travel days. (However, if you experience swollen feet while flying on a plane, you might want to take the shoes off during your flight or go with a different shoe altogether.)
