Before we got married, my husband and I spent almost every Valentine’s Day at our favorite Italian restaurant for nearly eight years. This little tradition of ours has been part of our relationship since we first started dating in 2010 and something I looked forward to every year. And not just because the food was good or because we were friends with the owner, but because it was dedicated time for us to spend together.

Unpopular opinion: eating lunch while running errands together does not count as a date. To me, a date is a specific date and time carved out for you and your partner to spend uninterrupted time with each other.

Valentine’s Day may look a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. Here are eight safer-at-home Valentine’s Day date ideas for married couples.

8 Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Day Date Ideas for Married Couples

Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Date Idea #1: Try a Date Night Subscription Box

I love going on date nights but struggle with planning it. That’s why this Valentine’s Day, I bought my husband and me a one-time subscription to Happily Datebox. According to their website, Happily is “date night at your doorstep” and “a fun, romantic date experience planned for you and delivered to your front door every month.”

All you have to do is choose a date box subscription tier, fill out a questionnaire for team Happily to personalize your date, and wait for it to arrive. Want to try a more budget-friendly version before committing? Happily also has a digital version for just $7.99. However, the caveat is that you will need to provide a majority, if not all, of the materials for the date night yourself.

I’m looking forward to our date box, which is supposed to arrive on Feb. 10. I’ll report back on our experience after we have our date night!

Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Date Idea #2: Have a Movie Night with All the Fixings

My husband and I are total homebodies, and there’s nothing we love more than spending Friday night at home watching a movie or binge-watching our favorite shows. If your ideal date night looks like a date night in, upgrade your experience by bringing the movie theater to you. Pop some popcorn, and make movie theater foods like hot dogs or nachos. Don’t forget the candy, furikake, and kaki mochi!

Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Date Idea #3: Get Intimate

For me, intimacy starts outside of the bedroom by connecting with my husband through conversation. (And I’m talking about a conversation that goes deeper than asking about each other’s day.) I am definitely the more open and vulnerable person in the relationship, and my husband not so much. Best Self Co. has products to help you and your partner connect on that intimate level. In fact, I gifted this Intimacy Deck to my husband and me for Christmas, and the topics are great! They also have other decks and tools for relationship and personal growth.

Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Date Idea #4: Cook Dinner Together

Cooking dinner together — especially cooking dinner from scratch together — is a nice way to spend time with each other. Turn on some dinner-making music, work on a recipe together, or turn it into a cooking competition like Iron Chef, Chopped, Guy’s Grocery Games. The loser has to wash and put away all the dishes.

Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Date Idea #5: Make Breakfast Fun

More of a breakfast or lunch person? Make an upscale brunch together, complete with POG mimosas, and eat it in bed or on your lanai (balcony / porch) or patio.

Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Date Idea #6: Elevate Your Takeout Experience

Not into cooking? Frolic Hawaii has a list of Hawaii restaurants with Valentine’s Day takeout specials.

Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Date Idea #7: Virtual Wine Tasting

Love wine? Become a wine expert from home by taking a virtual sommelier class. All you have to do is put together a yummy charcuterie board to graze from, and you’re all set. More of a cocktail person? I just Googled “virtual cocktail class,” and it produced 24,600,000 hits in 0.64 seconds. There’s bound to be a mixology class for you and your partner.

Safer-at-Home Valentine’s Date Idea #8: Virtual Game Night with Other Couples

If you and your partner are the competitive types, join other couples in a virtual game night or host your own. I’m not sure how a card or board game will work, but you can try other games like charades, trivia night, or the newlywed game.
