Why I Don't Wash My Face in the Morning

The secret is out! I don't wash my face in the morning. 🙈

Well, technically, I do wash it, but just with cold water — sans face wash. (I know that sounds gross, but hear me out.)

Two years ago I read this Huffpost interview with Michelle Phan and she shared that her secret to acne-free skin was drinking lots of water and not washing her face with face wash in the morning. She explained that over washing your face dries out your skin causing it to over produce oils which causes breakouts.

I was desperately looking for a way to clear up my adult acne and manage my oily skin and if this method worked for Michelle Phan then it'll work for me.

A few things happened to my skin once I stopped washing my face in the mornings:

  • My acne cleared up: I was super stoked to see the acne on my cheeks clearing up. It didn't happen instantly (in fact it took about year for the scarring to completely fade) but the acne was now non-existent.

  • My skin was less oily: I've been an oily girl all my life and i've always had to use primers and foundations for oily skin. Now that my skin is balanced, I can use products like cream foundations and Glossier Super Glow.

This method probably works best for those with super oily skin or oily combo skin (dry cheeks, oily t-zone). I cannot speak for those that have dry skin because I don't have dry skin. If you have dry skin and this works for you, i'd love to hear about your success in the comments section!

If you don't already regularly wash your bed sheets, towels, and makeup brushes — you should start. This method still works even if you don't keep up with the above — tbh, I haven't washed my brushes in a month (yuck!) — but it's best if you do. Your skin will thank you!

What are your thoughts on not washing your face in the morning? Would you try it?
