One of the areas of my life I wanted to clean up for a long time was my period products. I wore pads exclusively all my life, and when I heard about period panties, I wanted so badly to try them. But as someone with an unpredictable heavy flow, period panties scared me because what if I leak (more on that below)?! After much research and deliberation, I caved, and I finally bought myself the Knix Heavy Flow Period Kit (high rise).
The most off-putting thing about period panties is the price. It makes sense—I can only imagine the technology needed to create a super leakproof and sustainable panty is expensive. And although period panties seem like the most cost-effective choice in the long run, not everyone can afford sustainable options. I tried Knix first because my values aligned with their mission, and their products were what I was looking for for my period care needs.
Heavy Flow Period Kit Details
The Knix Heavy Flow Period Kit's starting price is $125 (excluding the high-rise kit). Yes, it's pricey. But after doing all the math, I thought the kit was a much better deal than buying one high-rise period panty for $35.
The Knix Heavy Flow Period Kit came with two Leakproof high rise underwear (best for light to medium flow), two Super Leakproof high rise underwear (best for medium to heavy flow), one pair of the Super Leakproof Dream Shorts with an extended gusset (best for medium to heavy flow), one carrying pouch, and one wash bag. Every order comes with a wash bag to keep your period underwear safe from wear and tear from your washing machine.
My Experience with Knix Heavy Flow Period Kit
Since buying my Knix Heavy Flow Period Kit in September, I've successfully used the period panties, without leaking, for two periods. My flow typically ranges from light to heavy seven days. Although the period kit I bought is for heavy flows, I like that there's a panty for almost every day of my flow. I also love that how comfortable Knix's period panties are. And they're seamless—it doesn't even feel like I'm wearing a pad at all, which I also love!
Like I mentioned above, I have a heavy period, and it can get messy sometimes. My period didn't leak onto my clothes when I tested the period panties during my last two cycles. But alas, all good things must come to an end; my period leaked on my favorite shorts during this past cycle—the first time I wore the period panties outside the house.
I was wearing Super Leakproof underwear for medium to heavy flows, which I just put on that morning, and had only been out of the house for less than two hours. When I got home, I used the bathroom and found a nicely sized period stain in the front of my shorts. Upon further inspection, the leak was from the blood that traveled above the gusset.
I'm a bit surprised the Knix Heavy Flow Period Kit doesn't come with longer gussets. I think the kit would be more accurate for heavy flows if the panties came with gusset lengths similar to the Super Leakproof Dream Shorts or the Cotton Super Leakproof Boxer Brief.

Fabric and Care
According to the website, machine wash the panties on cold with mild detergent and tumble dry on low (except for the Super Leakproof Dream Short, lay flat to dry). However, I don't find those instructions realistic.
Because I need to change panties often, especially during my heavier days, I handwash my panties after switching them out. First, I rinse the blood off the panties with warm water the best I can. Then I ring it out a couple of times with cold water before hanging them to dry. Then, at the end of the week, I throw them in the wash bag to wash with the rest of my laundry and hang them to dry. Sure, this method is more involved than the instructions on the website. But I find it's better than having the blood dry on the gusset until your next laundry day.
Overall, I'm pleased with my Knix Heavy Flow Period Kit purchase. I think it's an excellent kit for first-time period panty users. However, because the price of the kit is high, I would consider your lifestyle and financial situation before purchasing. Ask yourself these two questions before purchasing:
Do I have the financial means to invest in period panties?
Is my lifestyle the right fit for period panties? Think about how much time you spend at home versus not at home.
